Russell is a native Southern Californian; having been was raised in Camarillo, which is about one hour north of Los Angeles in Ventura County. He is the oldest of two. He was baptized in the Roman Catholic Church but attended the Episcopal Church most of his life. He is the son and grandson of Episcopal Priests. Russell has loved and walked with the Lord, since his youth, never really knowing a time when he was not a Christian.
In 1986, he graduated from St. Bonaventure HS (Ventura) and moved to San Diego in order to attend S.D.S.U. During his tenure as an Aztec, Russell earned both his Bachelor’s (1992) and Master’s Degrees in Social Work (1997). It was also during this season that Russell began his career as a Correctional Probation Officer with San Diego County from 1987-1997. His work with Probation focused on working with at risk Juveniles as well as those who were incarcerated. He was active with the Probation Officers’ Association and served as a POA officer and ultimately as President from 1994-1997.
In the Fall of 1997, Russell began his Theological Studies at Trinity School for Ministry, in Ambridge Pennsylvania, which is about thirty-miles north of Pittsburgh. Russell earned his Master’s of Divinity Degree in June of 2000 and returned the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego for his ordination to both the Deaconate and Priesthood. He served as an Associate Pastor at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church for four years (June 2000-December 2004). It was during this time that Russell met his beloved wife and friend Molly, whom he married on September of 2003. In 2004 Russell became the Senior Pastor (Rector) of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in the Rancho Penasquitos neighborhood of San Diego. In late 2006, Russell, his Associate Pastor Larry Eddingfield and much of the St. Timothy’s Parish left the Episcopal Church over Biblical and Doctrinal issues and formed what is now Christ the King Church, a member of the Anglican Church of North American in the Diocese of Western Anglicans.
Russell is presently very active in reaching out and ministering to youth, especially by leading a team that holds annual retreats for Middle and High School students. Giving teens the opportunity to hear the Gospel and encounter the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. Likewise, Russell is a Chaplain for both the San Diego County Sheriff and Probation Departments. Additionally, Russell is a member of the Provincial Council for the ACNA and founding Board Member of the Diocese. He has done a number overseas short-term missions in Africa and one in Argentina. He has missional heart and gets excited about bringing people to faith in Christ.
Russell is presently working on his Doctor of Ministry and hopes to complete his studies in the Summer of 2014. His hobbies include reading, shooting, cooking, traveling and spending time with his beloved wife, Molly.
Pastor Russell has a deep and abiding love of God and the Holy Scripture and as such he has committed his life and ministry to sharing the joy and grace of Christ as Lord and Savior through the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit.
